Location: Based in Whitehorse, regular periodic travel to various Yukon communities is required.

Hours: Avg. 40 hrs/week

Salary: Based on experience and education; base salary is $2400.00/month paid 15th and 31st

Duration: Tentative as early as 22/23 April to as late as 16 August 2012

Job Summary:

Responsible for monitoring, collecting and identifying invertebrate (insect) populations with a focus on mosquitoes and their predators. Describe and map aquatic habitats. Maintenance of a development site database, data entry, photographs, etc. Accurate and complete recording of daily monitoring treatment information. Public education and control of mosquito populations through an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach using physical, cultural and biological controls.

Timely reporting of field activities and liaison with various office personnel, both corporate and client.

Job Description/Duties:

• Field surveying, monitoring, site mapping, control of mosquito populations and written weekly and monthly summaries of activities. Daily e-mail of field data to corporate offices

• Collect and record relevant information (site descriptions, photographs, property ownership, monitoring and treatment data) necessary for the maintenance of a database and to the satisfaction of regulatory agencies

• Frequent personal contact with the public, client, and government agencies

• Maintain a daily, accurate and complete log of all activities, contacts, surveillance and control

• Use of biological control products including Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (VectoBac 200G, PCP#18158) to control larval mosquito infestations

• Schedule and organize activities to maximize program efficiency and efficacy

Requirements/skills:

• Willingness and ability to travel within Yukon to complete work. Personnel may be required to spend some nights outside of Whitehorse

• This is a field position which requires some flexibility of daily work hours. Work days average 8 hours; 40 hours week.

• Responsible, confident, mature attitude, good work ethic and ability to work and live independently. Must be willing and able to adapt to changing priorities

• Post Secondary education in biology, chemistry or related science

• Entomology and/or pesticide use an asset

• Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Personal computer or lap top required to complete word processing, data entry and email. Must know how to use Word and Excel.

• Valid Driver’s License. Please provide details of any restrictions if they exist.

• A reliable vehicle is required. Reimbursement for local (Whitehorse) vehicle use will be provided at the rate of $0.52/km. A vehicle (pick up/car) will be supplied (leased/rented) for all travels outside Whitehorse

• This is a field position having regular interaction with business and home owners. Appropriate dress will be required. Acceptable clothing includes walking shoes/hiking boots, walking shorts, collared shirts and t-shirts

• Pesticide Applicators Certificate issued by the BC Ministry of Environment. To be completed in Whitehorse before field work starts. Self-study kit/materials supplied. Certificate examination (3 hours) is open book

The company will provide:

• Assistance in acquiring the Pesticide Applicators certificate. Employee must have valid certificate before employment can start

• All safety gear and work-related materials

• Good experience under practical field conditions and the opportunity to work independently and as part of a team

• All training and support necessary to effectively perform job related duties. Field training provided

Remuneration:

• The work week averages 40.0 hours. Salary is based on experience and education. Base salary is $2400 per month, paid 15th and 31st

• Expenses for work related disbursements for travel and accommodations etc. outside of Whitehorse will be reimbursed following submission of receipts and completed expense account forms. A corporate VISA card will be supplied.

• Reimbursement for personal vehicle use ($0.52/km) in Whitehorse only while completing work-related duties will be provided
