About this Job
Reporting to the Director of Allied Patient Services, manages and directs the activities of the Laboratory Department; in the absence of a Resident Pathologist, provides advice to other medical professionals and confers with pathologists; maintains an equipment maintenance system, supplies inventory system and coordinates the maintenance of the Laboratory and cardiology information systems; promotes better patient care; serves as consultant to external medical staff; and performs other related duties
The following are knowledge and skills required for this position:
Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, theories, procedures, methods, techniques, practices and legislation
Knowledge and ability to maintain a wide variety of complex laboratory equipment
Excellent human resource and interpersonal skills with the ability to organize, coach, mentor and evaluate staff in varied roles.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills
Knowledge of the organization, functions of all depart¬ments, regulations, policies and procedures of the corporation,
Ability to plan, organize, schedule and assign work, resolve operating problems, and assess staff performance
Ability to maintain records and prepare comprehensive and concise reports and correspondence.
Good research and writing skills
Excellent problem solving and decision making skills
Ability to prepare training programs.
Effective interpersonal skills including discretion, tact and reliability
Ability to operate a computer and experience in utilizing a Laboratory information System
Ability to deal with interruptions, distractions, time pressures, concurrent demands and client pressures.
Cross cultural awareness and sensitivity
The successful candidate will have a degree in Laboratory Medicine or Healthcare Management, current CSMLS Certification as a Registered Medical Technologist in Canada (2 to 3 years of post secondary education at a technical institute) and 5 years recent experience in a medical laboratory and 2 years experience in a Laboratory Management position.
