Job Title: Archives Assistant (student)

Employer: Dawson City Museum

Wage: $15.00/hr

Hours: 35 hrs/wk (weekend work required)

Term: mid-May to the end of August

About: The Dawson City Museum is a major repository for archival records relating to the history of the Klondike region from the mid-1890s through to the present day, and an important source of information for genealogists researching their families' connections to the Klondike. Under the supervision of the Archival Technician, the successful candidate will assist visitors to the Klondike History Library with research requests, and complete projects designed to improve the quality of the visitor experience.

Duties and responsibilities:

- welcomes and engages visitors to the Klondike History Library

- answers phone and responds to email queries

- assists local citizens, tourists, and researchers with questions relating to the history of Dawson City and the greater Klondike region

- uses electronic finding aids, microfilm and other primary and secondary source materials to conduct research on behalf of visitors and remote researchers

- maintains statistical data on Klondike History Library usage

- promotes and processes the sale of archival photographs

- researches and creates exhibits for the Klondike History Library

- assists the Archival Technician with other duties relating to the maintenance and improvement of the reference and archival collections, as required


- candidates must be full-time returning post-secondary school students, willing to commit to work from the middle of May to the end of August (Preference will be given to candidates with a background in museum studies, history, library science, archives, or related disciplines.)

- excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

- strong written and oral communication skills

- strong research and critical thinking skills

- demonstrated ability to organize information and prioritize tasks and projects

- self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team

- familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, and online researching tools and applications

- interest in the study and promotion of Canadian history and heritage (Knowledge of the human and natural history of the Klondike region will be considered an asset.)
