About this Job

Help people discover what strange things are done in the midnight sun!

The Yukon Historical & Museums Association (YHMA) is looking for energetic and multi-talented individuals to operate our seasonal Walking Tour program and undertake an Archive Management Project. Located in the historic Donnenworth House in downtown Whitehorse, our interpreters don period clothing from our closet to provide visitors with entertaining and informative insights into Whitehorse’s colourful history. Our interpreters are responsible for many aspects of the visitor experience, including researching and developing tours, running the gift shop and resource centre, handling inquiries and other activities as needed. This is the perfect summer job for those interested in a career in heritage and are looking to network and build skills!

Successful applicants will split their time between conducting Walking Tours and working with the Executive Director to design and implement a summer project aimed at bringing a level of sanity to our archival holdings. We’ll teach you the basics, and you’ll gain experience in archival work and project management—as well as meet our friendly basement spider!

Applicants should have at least one year postsecondary education, and plan to return to school in the fall. Enthusiastic and committed high school students are also encouraged to apply. A background or interest in history, tourism, the performing arts, education, geography, archival management or related discipline is an asset. Archival experience a definite asset. The ideal candidate will have a passion for history, public speaking, and organizational skills! Successful candidates will have knowledge of the history of Whitehorse and the Yukon (or a strong willingness to learn), and must be willing to wear a period costume provided by the employer.

Parlez Francais? Sprechen Sie Deutsch? The Yukon receives many French- and German-speaking tourists each summer, so fluency in either language is a definite asset.

Work term: 27.5 hours/week, May 27 to August 31, 2013

Wages: $12.00 plus 4% vacation pay
